Cat Travel

Feline Travel Tips.

Tokyo: Japan’s obsession with all things feline.

After all, this is the homeland of YouTube star Maru, a Scottish fold whose antics have amassed more than 200 million views. Tokyo itself counts more than a hundred “neko” or cat cafés.

Where patrons come to sip lattes and socialize with numerous cats, who lounge around on chairs, sofas, baskets and occasionally the laps of their human fans. Some of the more popular: Shimokitazawa’s Cateriam, Nekobukuro in Ikebukuro, Curl Up Café in Haramachi, and Nyafe Melange. There’s even a handy map to locate them for purr-fect cat vacations.

1.Cat Cafe Nekorobi [Ikebukuro]

Pet Friendly Vacations

This is a great place to come play with cats right in the center of Tokyo. Bring a date, a friend, or come by yourself!

Spending some time with cats is so relaxing, especially when there are so many!

Look at all those fluffy cats!

On weekdays, the first hour is ¥1,100.
On weekends and holidays, it’s ¥1,300.

2. Cat Cafe Mocha [Shibuya]

Pet friendly you guessed:)

5. Cat Cafe JaLaLa [Akihabara] While You Pet Travel

Cafe Jalala is a popular pet-friendly vacation as a cat cafe where you can enjoy delicious coffee and tea!

The second drink is 50% off, so it’s great to stay a long time here.

This establishment has “only” eight cats but it might be our favorite of the cafes on this list.

From the outside, the Neko JaLaLa’s Akihabara branch looks more like a fancy private residence or an architect’s office.

Only the cat claw doorknob betrays this place’s feline predilections. Inside, the Neko JaLaLa resembles a combination of a children’s bookstore and the set of Barney—there are bookshelves and padded cat playground equipment all-around perfect for your cat vacation.

If you go: Ask for an English copy of the (unintentionally) hilarious bios on each of the cats here.Tokyo locations: Takadanobaba, Akihabara.

Another purr-fect cat vacation.

On weekdays, it’s ¥1,100 for an hour.
On weekends, it’s ¥1,300 for an hour.
You can also stay for 30 minutes (¥550/650), for 90 minutes (¥1,650-1,950) and for 2 hours (¥2,200/2,600).

Where next for my cat vacations:)

Stray Cats in Marrakesh: They sleep on parked motorbikes, prowl the narrow alleys of the souks, gather under trees, and are often found on standby at the butchers waiting for a handout.

Stray cats are everywhere, and they are treated with an almost tender affection by the residents of the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, who are often seen putting out bowls of food and water on the streets.

Cat cafes of Taipei Taiwan: Seem to be popping up everywhere around the world, and most people associate the concept with Japan.

However, it was a small cafe in a suburb of Taipei that first introduced the idea of dining among animal companions.

Cafe Dog and Cats in the Shilin district has a small clowder of adopted and rescued cats as well as two dogs and has been serving coffee to crazy cat people from all over the world.

“These cats are cute,” says Masayoshi Yamamoto, a Japanese photographer on a mission to photograph all the cats on his travels around the world. And he has just spent the past hour stalking every feline resident here at Cafe Dogs and Cats. “I think they are cuter than Japanese cats!”

Other than the original, there are about 50 cat cafes all over Taipei, a city 40 times smaller than Sydney.

Don’t forget to visit the Hello Kitty-themed boarding gate at Terminal 2 in Taipei International Airport when you leave. Yes, you read that right. A Hello Kitty-themed boarding gate!

Belgium: The Kattenstoet (Festival of the Cats) is held every three years on the second Sunday of May; the next is scheduled for 2021. It celebrates the noble feline with a street parade of floats, music, stilt walkers and costumed townsfolk, many of whom dress as cats, witches or mice.

The festival culminates with a performance in which a jester tosses children’s toy cats from the Cloth Hall belfry down to the crowd—a tradition that harks back to the harsh Middle Ages practice of throwing actual cats from the belfry in the spring. (Not to worry: no kitties are harmed in the modern reenactments.)

The Kattenstoet (lit. “Festival of the Cats”) is a parade in Ypres, Belgium, devoted to the cat.

It has been held regularly on the second Sunday of May since 1955. Most recently, the 45th edition took place on May 13, 2018, with the next scheduled for 9 May 2021.

The parade commemorates an Ypres tradition from the Middle Ages in which cats were thrown from the belfry tower of the Cloth Hall to the town square below.

Symbolically reviving this practice for the parade festivities, a jester tosses plush children’s-toy cats from the Cloth Hall belfry down to the crowd, which awaits with outstretched arms to catch one.

The throwing of the cats from the belfry is followed by a mock witch burning.

Participants in the festivities often dress as cats, witches, mice, or townspeople from ages past, and the festival also features brass bands and people riding on horseback. Around 2,000 people participated in the 2012 parade.

The festival is a popular tourist event in Belgium and has helped strengthen the local tourist economy around Ypres. 8,000 people visited the event in 2000.

The Romanians are no strangers to the term “crazy cat people”. International cat shows are held regularly and one of the country’s tech start-ups is the world’s first (and only) company that hired a cat as its communications manager, in 2015.

So, naturally, the official World Capital of Cats is in Romania, in a town called Ciorani where the domestic cat population outnumbers humans 4:1. And they haven’t counted the strays yet.

Ciorani is in the Carpathian Mountains range so it is easy to combine a hiking holiday with some serious cat loving.

Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary, Rome: The mission of this sanctuary is to “work together to raise the quality of life of Rome’s abandoned cats”—and it welcomes volunteers.

Expect to perform duties such as cleaning cages and distributing food to some of the 300-odd cat residents.

If you’re living in Rome you can volunteer as a “foster parent” for young kittens in your own home.

The site, which contains ancient ruins, has a glamorous pedigree: while filming at the nearby Teatro Argentina, Italian actress Anna Magnani famously spent her breaks here feeding the cats.

Poezenboot, Amsterdam, the Netherlands: Cats and water don’t usually mix well, yet this floating cat sanctuary on Amsterdam’s Herengracht canal has proven a grand success.

Founded in 1966 by a local legend named Henriette van Weeld

Who took in stray cats and eventually moved them onto a houseboat in the canal—the floating barge has become a tourist attraction, drawing cat lovers and the curious alike. Visitors can volunteer, donate or adopt.
