How to Succeed as a Digital Nomad
Guest Post Adventure’s Ahead! How to Succeed as a Digital Nomad was written by the talented: carlalopez@boomerbiz.org https://www.boomerbiz.org/
The old 9-to-5 routine, complete with a regular commute and a suburban home, isn’t for everyone. Fortunately, the digital revolution has made a new career path more than viable.
If you have permanent wanderlust or just want to see the world while you are still young, the path of a digital nomad could be for you. Here, Tourandtakein.com explains how you can succeed as a digital nomad and carve your own path to success while on the go!
Supporting Yourself While Wandering
The first thing you’ll need to consider (aside from which countries you want to visit, of course!) is how you’ll support yourself financially. If you aren’t from a trust fund family or didn’t win the lottery, odds are you’ll need to support yourself by:
● Getting a steady job you can work remotely (i.e. on the computer)
● Being free and willing to take odd jobs here and there along your travels
Most digital nomads are only “digital” because they choose the former of the two options. Being a digital nomad gives you greater freedom, more financial flexibility, and is oftentimes safer for travelers on the road.
Great Jobs for Digital Nomads
So, you need a job – but what career should you choose? That’s up to you! There are plenty of excellent jobs for digital nomads, including but not limited to:
● Programming
● Consultant
● Video editor
● Copywriter/editor
● Graphic or web designer
● Blogger or YouTube content creator
The ideal digital nomad job will pay enough for you to enjoy your life, while also giving you the freedom and flexibility necessary to fully experience the places you travel to. We do it via traveling and writing about it. Need a mentor? We have all the necessary tools to help you start.
Start a Freelance Business
If you’re more of a job maker than a job seeker, you might make your own career by starting a freelance business abroad! You can form a business entity and do anything you please to fund your digital nomad adventures, provided that you have the skills needed.
Example freelance business ideas include:
No matter what freelance business you decide to branch out into, consider creating your business with a “DBA” or “doing business as” name – for example, John Smith doing business as a freelance web editor. DBA names make it much easier for you to branch out into additional services or products later down the road if needed.
Or if you want to sell products under a separate name from your primary business moniker. A formation service like Zenbusiness can help you with the process.
Finding the Best Rentals and Hotspots
Once you have your career or financial situation locked in, do some research and identify the ideal rental locations for your route. In theory, you’ll want hotels, hostels, and any other lodgings that are affordable and that come with reliable Internet/Wi-Fi.
That way, you can kick your feet up and relax, you won’t burn through your nomad budget too quickly, and you’ll be able to maintain your job (and keep your employer happy!). If you’re a freelancer, this is also important since it means you won’t be unreachable by your clients.
Saving Scratch While Abroad
While you travel as a digital nomad, be sure to keep a tight rein on your budget and not spend more than you need to. Being a digital nomad is more about experiencing different countries and locations frugally rather than spending exorbitantly.
Here’s one way to save via transferring money. We have used this company and method since it started and now in over 74 countries. Wise (formally known as Transferwise), which is a UK-regulated company, started in 2011 and still growing in many countries. Give it a try with a fee-free transfer of up to 500 GBP. You won’t be disappointed.
Track each expense you have and look into tax breaks as a freelancer or if you own your own business. You still have to pay taxes if you’re an American ex-pat, but you may qualify for certain tax credits, too!
Keeping in Communication with Clients, Friends, and Family
Adventure is a lot to experience, but don’t forget to keep open and consistent lines of communication with clients, customers, coworkers or bosses, and your friends and family most of all.
Your friends and family will want to know that you’re safe on your journeys, and you’ll feel better maintaining a connection to your anchored life back home.
Plus, your friends and family members are great people to tell about everything you’re seeing and doing!
See What’s Out There and Enjoy the Excitement!
The digital nomad lifestyle is more accessible (and affordable) than ever before! Get yourself a laptop, put together a travel bag, and get ready to see the world. Hopefully, this article Adventure’s Ahead! How to Succeed as a Digital Nomad has given you some inspiration!
