# Tanjung Tong – Directions
Tanjung Tong beach is a beach that has a bit of everything, great views walking to it from Strait Quay Marina and Mall.
Overnight accommodation from 150 rInggit in a chalet, fishing boat hire to take you to Monkey Island and back, 250 Ringgit with the capacity of 11 friends if you can find that many lol.
Strait Quay Marina
The beach itself is a stretch of around 1/4 mile approx, very clean, however, remember this is used by the local fishermen.
So you will find the odd broken crab.
Ropes from the boats in the sea to the anchors in the sands, so watch they don’t pop up and trip you over, while the boats sway, back and forth.
Chinese temple to the North and plenty of options for food, what’s more, there are the old bunkers that were used to defend Penang in the early days of the Japanese invasion.
Wartime Bunkers
Tanjung Bungah – Directions Video of our trip
Tanjun Bungah Beach – Right of infinity sea beach hotel. A nice little walk-in lockdown, where I felt like a castaway! Tanjung Bungah (also spelt as Tanjong Bungah) is a suburb of George Town in Penang, Malaysia.
It is located along the northern coast of Penang Island between Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Tokong, and about 6.5 km (4.0 mi) northwest of the city centre.
Tanjung Bungah is well known as a beach destination, with several hotels and resorts lining the beaches within the area. Decades of urbanization has also led to the mushrooming of residential high-rises at Tanjung Bungah.
In addition, the suburb is home to a significant expatriate population. Tanjung Bungah was formerly a quiet fishing village populated by Malay and Chinese fishermen. It only gained prominence as a beach destination of choice for locals and tourists in the 1950s.
At the time, Batu Ferringhi had yet to be developed.
The crystal clear waters off Tanjung Bungah also attracted two local swimming clubs into the area – the Penang Swimming Club and the Penang Chinese Swimming Club, which are still prominent!
You can see more of this beach via our YouTube video and in our Malaysia Memories
Sundowners Video 1 Video 2
Well having been in Penang now for over a year in 6 different types of lockdowns, I’ve come to see so many beautiful scenic sundowners and sunrises from different parts of the island.
I would say the best ones I’ve seen though, are the ones from Bora Bora restaurant and bar. Or in Batu Ferringhi itself!!
Check out our video of the sundowners
5 Places to see the sundowners that we recommend
1) Sand Bar @ Hard Rock, Batu Ferringhi Beach 11100, Penang.Website is one of 5 best beach bars for drinks and food are, Sand Bar at Hard Rock Hotel, Batu Ferringhi.
Which is quite expensive as you would guess with it being the Hard Rock, however, you can stroll along the beach and there is a beach entrance, just say you’re having a drink and when I went, you didn’t need to be a resident to enjoy the bar:)
I have also stayed at this hotel for one night and the rooms were immaculately designed, that night I was sleeping with John Lennon in a massive frame above my head.
The greetings via the picture TV were exceptionally well thought out, as above, and the service was tremendous throughout. You really did feel like a rockstar and I took them up on that invitation. I actually ended up staying for more than one night but 4.

2) Bora Bora, Batu Ferringhi, Lot 415, Jalan Batu Ferringhi, 11100 Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Pinang – Website.
We’ve drank in here a few times, maybe a few too many drinks sometimes, but it does excellent salmon pizzas and the Char Kway Teow is one of the best I’ve experienced on the island and a realistic price of 9 Ringgit.
Beers are not as expensive as the Hard Rock about 15 Ringgit UK pounds) Great views at around 7.30 pm each night unless it’s cloudy.
Bora Bora also puts a lot of plastic chairs and tables out in front on the sands next to the palm trees which have surfboards attached to them.
Very impressive scenic views and a great atmosphere, mainly middle-class Malays with a few local ex-pats and at the weekend many interstate travellers from KL, etc, flaunting their wealth. But fun place, you won’t be disappointed.
This is in the top 5 places to see the beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia.
Check out our video on the sundowner!
More beautiful beaches and sunsets
3) Frandys Beach Bar – 363, Gerai Kilat, Batu Ferringhi, 11100, Penang – Website is a bit further up from Bora Bora and has a bit of a different feel.
Bora Bora has live music most nights,s and more of a restaurant feel than a beach bar. This also put tables outside on the sands and the food is delicious, especially the seafood. Well, you are at the seaside so it’s freshly caught.
Watch the sun go down from our link here and please subscribe to our channel for more info, tips, and how to save and have an easy logistical fun holiday.
4) Shangri La Golden Sands Resort – Jalan Batu Ferringhi, Kampung Tanjung Huma, 11100 Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Pinang – Website
This 5-star hotel is at the start of Batu Ferringhi on your right-hand side, As a non-resident, you can get a day pass for one or two people and enjoy all the amenities for as little as 80 Ringgit. Or go in and have a meal at the beachside restaurant during the day, or on an evening enjoy their BBQs on the grass lawn next to the open bar. Reasonably priced as well for such a prestigious hotel. Well worth a visit.
During the day I used to go and sit outside of the beach restaurant and watch the world go by while working on my laptop.
The staff is very friendly and Ah, has been there for over 20yrs and is a very nice lady.
Full menu and drinks again at great prices, and another great place to see the beaches sundowners, and sunsets of Penang Malaysia
5) Beach Blanket Babylon, Georgetown – Directions
32, Jln Sultan Ahmad Shah, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang – Website
We found this by chance as I was looking for the Mansion which is the same company, this is an exquisite building and when you first arrive at the door, looks more like a big white mansion hotel, which within, has music and art deco with taste.
There is an inside bar and ballroom for dancing, when you walk past the bar, you will head into the gardens.
Here you will see another bar and restaurant and from the garden where you will dine, you can see the small beach and sea. this is not the best place for the sundowners, however, it has an ambience, always quite full with Georgetown ex-pats as well as the locals and the food was fantastic,
I had the lamb shank, I can’t remember the last time I had this dish. again reasonably priced and a beer around the 15 Rinngint mark. Beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia

Sunrises
My main experience of sunrise was from a new studio apartment I rented at the landmark during the lockdowns.
Where I could visualize them while I was still in bed, an experience well worth the price of the apartment. Beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia
Shamrock Beach – Directions Our video of the trip
Shamrock Beach is a stretch of rocky coast in Batu Ferringhi, on the northern part of Penang Island. It is located between Tanjung Bungah and Miami Beach, which is part of Batu Ferringhi.
Shamrock Beach is noted for its stretch of golden sand which is a cove shape strewn with large boulders.
Most of the boulders here have jagged edges and are quite dangerous, so be careful when climbing them as they are not as rounded off compared to those further north in Batu Ferringhi.
Shamrock Beach is popular among the local community, particularly the Malays, who go there for picnicking and angling. Swimming is not popular on this beach, as the water here is not that clean. Occasionally you may see a canoe/kayak passing by, as the Penang Watersports Centre has located a short distance to the south. Beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia
Up from the beach are some vender eateries, however, most only open on weekends to catch the trade from other states. Check out our video
Moonlight Bay – Directions
Level 2, 2-02-01, Jalan Moonlight Bay, 11100 Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Pinang
This beach is within walking distance from Miami Beach and heading towards Batu Ferringhi and opposite you will see Moonlight Bat development, so you can’t miss it.
This beach again is a small cove shaped beach and a bit run down as per nothing open on it or above it on the coastal road. There are toilets though but a bit run down.
The beach is actually very nice and clean, I wouldn’t swim thou just a walk into the sea. On each side of the beach, you will find huge boulders, worth climbing on them safely for a selfie:) Check out our video Beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia
Miami Beach – Directions Video
This Beach can be accessed by the 101 / 102 buses every ten minutes, A short stretch of shore before Batu Ferringhi, the confusingly named Miami Beach as in Florida, which shares the same name is a small public beach with a convenient namesake restaurant nearby.
The sand is made up of big granules that are tolerable to walk on barefoot but can get scratchy. You might feel a bit of discomfort when entering and exiting the water because of this coarse sand. So flip flops are advised.
There are a few bite places on the roadside and a souvenir shop selling Penang memorabilia and swimwear. Miami Beach is a very popular picnic spot.
The tsunami disaster killed 21 people in the area on the 26th of December 2004, The number of deaths was 67 with 52 in Penang, 12 in Kedah, 2 in Perak, and 1 in Selan.
After speaking with one of the lifeguards, they work for the Penang Government, which they do various positions/jobs when needed, if there’s a major fire they will attend and help out and as we spoke, their next assignment will be to look after the people who came into the country and were put in hotel quarantine for 10 days. Hats off to the lads!
Paradise Beach, AKA Haunted and Enchanted Beach Directions – YouTube Channel
This beach is another small cove beach with many hidden stories, the sand is soft (ideal for sunbathing) with a lot of rocks on each end, This beach is within walking distance to Golden Sands beach and the Batu Ferringhi main beach. This is not easy to find, nor signposted, even many local Penangites don’t know of this one!
The best way to find it is if you’re getting the 101/102 bus in getting off at the first stop near the Rasi Shangrila Hotel, which is the start of Batu Ferringhi centre, and walk towards the Army camp heading backwards. Then you will the above, the entrance again is quite steep, so be careful but has footpaths
I’ve been to this beach several times and never seen anyone, until this visit.
Where two Iranians were camping in the makeshift accommodation, which apparently was built by a Hungarian who spent some time there and adapted quite a few things to make it very enchanted and possibly scary. He also built the sea wall!
The beach consists of hanging ropes, hanging seating, a water well, an Indian shrine, bricks, and a mortar BBQ stove.
Several barks than bigger than the bite beach dogs, coconut trees, large rocks, and much more. Photo opportunities galore, beach accommodation.
While I was there, having a homemade cup of tea with the Crusoes, they were a fishing boat and the crew were there to pick up some rocks for the crab pots to be weighed down.
This is a must-see beach for sure and a beach that is very private, so grab a picnic, a few beers, or a bottle of wine and dream of being on a deserted island as a castaway:) Check out our blog for more pictures of the beach
Patricks Beach – Directions Our video of the trip
This is a stretch of beach next to the Mercure Hotel and leads to the Penang Swimming Club.
Which is in-between Tanjung Tong and Shamrock beach.
A small stretch of beach but worth a visit and a few picture shots are available opportunities.
This is a very new find, and I only found it after searching Google for all beaches in Penang, I asked an Expat why it was called Patrick and he said he didn’t know and thought it was part of the Strait beach.
Maybe someone knows?
There were no food outlets nearby, so maybe a picnic would be a good idea or pop into the beach hotels close by.
Northam Beach – Directions Video
Well another little find, this time in Georgetown, the only beach in GT. I believe to access this, the best way is to walk through the Northam beach cafe. There may be other entrances to the sides of the cafe.
I asked the owner if I could walk through and she was not a happy camper at first, even though it is an open-air cafe.
The cafe doesn’t start with its shared vendors till 4.30 pm. However, after telling her I just wanted to access the beach, she agreed, bless her! Possibly the lockdown is taking its toll. This is an ideal place for a possible sunset/sundowner but if that doesn’t happen, a great view of eating and looking out to the sea with the sea breeze.
The sea today was like a still pond/lake with no current whatsoever, ideal for a dip, and local fishing boats about, and repairing their nets, check our video out.
Teluk Bayu Directions Our video of the trip
One part of the beach
We set off from Georgetown heading on Route 6 towards the airport and Bayan Lepas, overall on a moto it took us at a steady pace, around 45 Minutes, and seemed quicker coming back. This is a very local beach, where they come for the day out to swim, eat and play/rest on the beach with their tents and shelters.
Teluk Bayu, we found to be a hidden gem. Parking is free and as you head towards the beach, you will pass the lake part, which has some great picturesque views, I say hidden gem, as it’s not really mentioned as you will be possibly geared towards Georgetown and all the fabulous beaches around Batu Ferringhi
This is a hive for stayovers via camper vans and tents to see the beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia.
The perfect time to visit the beach is certainly during sunset, the locals mentioned, during which most families will gather for picnics and an evening swim. We went in the mid-afternoon, so didn’t get a chance to see it as driving back in the darks is not for me, especially on a scooter.
There is a small local fishing community with housing behind the beaches and worth a little to wander around and see how they live.
Have some spare cash for eateries and small souvenir set up stalls.
Bringing the clams home!
Teluk Bahang Directions
Teluk Bahang beach facing the National Park
This is a town within the city of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. It is located within the Southwest Penang Island District, near the northwestern tip of Penang Island. Our drive from Batu Ferringhi to the National Park
Around about 23km from Komtar in Georgetown. the National Park inhabits within.
At 23 sq km, this is Malaysia’s smallest national park
its beach-fringed forests are home to silvered leaf monkeys, flying lemurs, leopard cats and abundant birds, amphibians and reptile species.
You can easily fill a day with activities such as jungle walks and boat trips to serene golden-sand beaches. Bus 101 runs here from central George Town. From the park entrance, a return boat trip should cost RM100 to Teluk Duyung (Monkey Beach), RM200 to Pantai Kerachut and RM220 to Teluk Kampi.
Teluk Bahang is a busy fishing village in the northwest corner of Penang. There is a jetty and a shallow inlet where small fishing boats are moored.
Fishing Trawlers
There is a long sandy beach in this bay where fisherwomen can be seen scraping the surface to look for shellfish.
The beach is suitable for walks or sunbathing but the sea is not very clean for swimming as sewage from the village, so they say.
There a number of attractions in the vicinity of Teluk Bahang: Such has butterfly farm, escape, tropical spice gardens and the Penang national park.
Beach Bar Crawl, Lunch, And Dinner To Watch The Sundowner

The Park Royal by the Pan pacific group, experience another 5-star drink and scenic photographic opportunity.
Park Royal Gardens and Bar
You should be warming up by now and ready for some relaxing music and possibly a lunchtime snack, head back on the beach and Northwest or left as you come out and stroll along to BoraBora beach bar.
BoraBora talk to the shark the manager or the very friendly staff about things to do in Penang that the locals do, like hiking around the Botanic Gardens, sightseeing the dams, waterfalls and other great way to watch from the Beaches, Sundowners, Sunsets, Penang, Malaysia
The menu mixes international standards with much-loved Asian dishes and you’ll be hard-pressed to pick out your favourites. I love the salmon pizza:)
It’s not pocket-change worthy meals, but if you’re craving good food, a great atmosphere and even better company then Bora Bora is a place to be.
Then it’s time to head left to the beach and the Hard Rock Resort Check out the music memorabilia,
Listen to the vibes and have a drink inside to possibly cool down. Meet the Beatles! It may be a hard day’s night!! but you should be on a roll by now:)
After the Hard Rock and you’re still ok, don’t need a lie down it’s a turn left again for the Frandies beach bar where you can enjoy the sunset and have a lovely meal or nibbles to soak up your bar crawl.
Another great spot to see the beaches sundowners and sunsets of Penang Malaysia.
Finishing off with a lovely stroll back to collect your belongings or just to chill on a lounger and finish your chilled day at the Golden Sands or if you’re hardcore a return leg of the bar crawl. Remembering life is not a dress rehearsal live it, love it!
Pantai Malindo
After a 45 minute journey through Balik Pulua town, which was a rather quaint place.
Where you would get off the rapid bus, you will need a lift to this isolated beach, we were a bit disappointed with the beach, even though it was high tide, the sea looked very dirty and not much of a beach.
Pantai Malindo stretches to the south of Kuala Sungai Burong.
It’s a wide and deserted beach, in line with its off-beat location, therefore few visitors, on the way you will go through the countryside, which is stunning and worth a few pictures.
Just before the beach and the fishing strip you will see the countryside stables for all the different sized horses, and donkeys, this is where you can ride them, feed them, touch them and take pictures with them.
The cost to enter is relatively cheap at 12 Ringgit and worth a trip inside, if you wish to ride them it will cost 20 Ringgit for 200 meters.
A little trot of 24km from Georgetown to the countryside stables, which is is a privately owned property by Wan Aikhsan & Doris Lim. It is nestled in the midst of Sungai Burung agriculture area in Balik Pulau, well worth a family visit.
